The Importance of Optimism in Tough Times:

September 10, 2026 By admin

A competitive edge & mindset

For many individuals, business owners and corporate businesses the last few years in NZ have been unprecedented and seriously challenging to navigate. Uncertainty has seemingly prevailed and the job market has been significantly impacted, both by individuals being reluctant to make changes in a tough climate and by employers putting on the brakes, in terms of desired hiring, while they adopt a ‘wait and see’ approach.

This said – the thing that stands out for us and for employers through these tough times, has been those who demonstrate pragmatism, whilst staying intrinsically optimistic about a ‘Turning of the Tides’.

We recognise that the longer things have remained challenging, the longer an individual has battled the job market, potentially the more impactful this is to self confidence, perceived resilience and their ability to navigate this with an optimistic outlook.

As Fusion Partner Directors – we have experienced this, both as small business owners and on a daily basis, as we engage, support and represent people and organisations through these challenges.

Our Top Tips – for retaining an optimistic and pragmatic outlook:

1. Address the reality, stay informed and across what the experts are saying and remind yourself that this is ‘a point in time’.

2. Tackle the things which are actually in your circle of control and accept the things which are not / stop giving these valuable headspace.

3. Do something every day which energises you and is ‘good for the soul’.

4. Make space for some quiet time and to decompress daily/ let go of the day and any challenges/ pressures.

5. Celebrate the small wins/ steps forward, no matter how insignificant these may appear at the time.

6. Surround yourself with people who are optimistic as energy transfers.

7. Set short term, even weekly goals that are achievable and will help you to move forward and focus on the now not the future/ long term goals right now.

Optimism is one of the top 5 traits, in high performers we and our clients look for and absolutely a leadership trait that packs a punch! If you are not feeling optimistic right now … practice until you do and remember -optimism can make or break your interview, first connections and is the way you can stand out in the crowd and ensure people remember you and want to work with you.
