Deciding whether to accept a job offer is a big deal!  These decisions can be life changing and career making so it is essential that you apply the required scrutiny. What is as important in this process, is how you manage your personal brand, as this will be remembered, regardless of outcome and should not be overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many employers will have faced challenges, of late, with job seekers accepting offers and then withdrawing acceptance or accepting a counter offer at the final hour, leaving the employer feeling they have been ‘played or dealt with dishonestly’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether or not this is the intent by the applicant, this is highly avoidable and here are some tips to manage your personal brand throughout and avoid a negative impact to your personal brand, whether this is with the potential employer or an external recruitment agent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top Tips for Managing your Personal Brand in a Recruitment Process:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Transparency is Key <\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Being open and honest from the get go about what is important to you, why you are seeking a change\/ next step and what your expectations are is key! This includes discussions around financials, progression path and how you wish to work. Do not be concerned to have straight up discussions as this will help you and the potential employer\/ agent understand what really matters and cover these factors at the get go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It is also critically important to be open about other processes you may be engaged in, internal or external and how these compare. This often, in fact, will assist in expediating a process\/ decision making, rather than negatively affect your application so managing this from the start will ensure you present as open, transparent and as someone who can communicate comfortably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. Leave No Stone Unturned<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A recruitment process is a two way street so ensuring you ask the right questions and do your due diligence is important and should not be avoided\/ left to the last hour at offer stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Failure to ask for the information you need until the last hour is not recommended and may be viewed as ‘ buying time’ or a lack of commitment so critical to get what you need as early in the process as possible, allowing  best management of expectations for all parties and time for employers to digest and address any potential challenges early in the process. This additionally benefits applicants in terms of your time investment and energy expended when exploring any opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Put questions in writing wherever possible and if you are not getting what you need then you need to ask yourself if this is the employer you wish to work with\/ for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    3. Communicate Consistently and Be Responsive<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There is nothing that upsets applicants more than not hearing back from employers\/ agencies within a timely manner and getting radio silence – right? It is so important to manage your own brand and consider how you communicate through a process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Being available\/ getting back to a potential employer\/agency managing the role in a timely manner is critical and your ability to do this will be keenly observed throughout any process. Whilst it can be challenging when you are working and trying to find a new role, sending a simple text \/ responding to make a time that works to speak, acknowledging contacts and responding promptly is key for your brand and initial perceptions and will go a long way to how you are viewed by all concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    4. Be Gracious Throughout & Think Long Term<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Always consider how you are conducting your brand, thank people and act respectfully, as you would like others to do so (if the shoe were on the other foot) and remember to thank people for their time along the way, as this is a huge reflection on how you operate and what is also important for how you wish others to interface with you. (Two way street \/ partnership again here).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Regardless of how you proceed with an offer, build bridges and leave doors open as this is bound to be helpful in the long term and you never know where this will lead. (eg: They remember you for future opportunities and you stand out).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    5. No Surprises <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Acting with a ‘no surprises mantra’, where any concerns are addressed early, you communicate your thinking and options and do so along the way will go a long way to ensuring that whatever decision you make, in a recruitment process\/ job offer scenario, you carefully manage your personal brand, protect your personal integrity and build future relationships, which will be potentially valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
